USS Constitution is the fourth coin issued by the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus in the “Sailing ships” series. The series of collector coins has been devoted to the most magnifi-cent and recognizable ships. Their unique charm and excellence have been represented on the coins in a dynamic way. Coins are produced using the integral HOLOGRAM technology with an image of the wind rose. The series includes coins: Sedov (2008); Dar Pomorza (2009) and Amerigo Vespucci (2010).
"USS Constitution" is a three- masted navy frigate made of oak wood. It is the oldest floating commissioned vessel in the world. Named by President George Washington after the Consti-tution of the United States, she is in service used by the US Navy.
“USS Constitution” is one of the Six Original Frigates commissioned by the US Congress in 1794. The vessel was launched on 10 October 1797 at the Hartt's Shipyard in Boston. Throughout its long service this beautiful ship has participated in a number of military actions, of which the most important one was the victorious battle with a large British frigate, "HMS Guerriere", on 19 August 1812 in the Gulf of St. Laurence. Following that battle, due to the exceptional resilience of the hull to the British shooting, the ship acquired the nickname "Old Ironsides". Today the beautifully restored "USS Constitution" may be seen in the city of her making, Boston, Massachusetts.
The vessel was built from white American oak, considered one of the hardest woods in the world. The three masts and the bowsprit had a total of 13 square sails and several staysails. With this rigging the "Constitution" managed to run at 13.5 knots.
