Exciting new series of collector coins bringing to life Gargoyles and Grotesques from around the world and the buildings they appear on. The 2nd coin in series features the gargoyle called SPITTER with the NOTRE DAME DE PARIS (France), in the background.
“What is the meaning of these unclean monkeys, these savage lions and monstrous creatures?” – St Bernard, 12th Century.  In architecture a gargoyle is a stone carving of a fantastic or mythical figure used for decorative purposes and are found on structures all over the world. They serve a dual purpose – to protect the building from dark forces as well as divert rain from the building as they are fitted with an elaborate downspout. Grotesques are architectural creatures like a gargoyle but do not have a functioning drainage capability. Gargoyles and grotesques date back to ancient times but were popularized in 12th century Medieval times in Europe.

Notre-Dame de Paris, also known as Notre-Dame Cathedral or simply Notre-Dame, is a medieval Catholic cathedral on the Île de la Cité in the fourth arrondissement of Paris, France. The cathedral is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture, and it is among the largest and most well-known church buildings in the world. The naturalism of its sculptures and stained glass serve to contrast it with earlier Romanesque architecture.
