derives from an Etruscan variation of the Greek-italic gladiatorial category of Thirimachos and, as this category, he fights almost exclusively against another provocator. Endowed with a rectangular, sub-rectangular or mixed shape middle size shield, he founds his technique upon an exasperated offensive use of the shield, striking with the inferior edge, like a guillotine. The reduced size of the shield, in comparison to the models of the myrmillo or the hoplomachus, determines the demand of additional protections: a covering for the advanced leg up to the thigh and a wide protection for the breast (spongia pectoris).
The use of a short dagger forces the provocator to remain close to the adversary, determining a very penetrating fencing, in order to entry in the opponent's guard or to open it using the armed arm.
