The legal tender 22 carat gold Krugerrand Gold Coin SOUTH AFRICAN KRUGERRAND 2012 - 1/10 oz was the brainchild of the South African Chamber of Mines and first became available to the public in 1967. The concept of the Krugerrand was basically to promote RSA gold internationally but when the gold standard was under pressure in the 1960’s, the Chamber of Mines developed its marketing further to enable the ordinary man on the street to be able to own his piece of RSA gold. This unique gold coin would contain exactly one troy ounce fine gold and its value would be connected to the daily gold price. It would be legal tender and sold at a relatively low premium over the current gold price. Intense marketing took place in America and Europe and soon the Krugerrand dominated the world’s coin market over the next nine years. In 1980, the fractional Krugerrands (½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz) were added to the 1-oz Krugerrand making the Krugerrand a ordable to more people. During the years when sanctions against the South African government were applied in the mid 1980’s, other mints elsewhere took the opportunity to issue their own legal tender bullion coins. However, the Krugerrand had become one of the world’s leading brand names and remains so today in the 21st century. Stories abound of people purchasing property in foreign countries with Krugerrands, and even Hollywood movies have been made featuring deals concluded with Krugerrands. The Krugerrand is available in both bullion and proof state. The South African Mint proudly sells the proof Krugerrands which are encapsulated and issued with a numbered certificate of authenticity. These proof Krugerrands are available in 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10th oz, as singles or in sets.
Nice and perfect gift!
