The Mint of Poland is proud to present the "Polotsk" coin, in the special series of commemorative coins called the "Hanseatic Towns". The theme of the collection are the towns and the cities of the Hanseatic League actived in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period. The Hansa was an alliance of trading towns located along the coast of the North and Baltic Seas, established to promote economic cooperation. Ultimately the Hansa lost its importance as a result of the great geographic discoveries and the institution of sea routes connecting Europe with America and India.
The mintage of coin is limited- up to 7,000 pieces, struck on silver blank of Ag 925, in proof quality.
In addition to Polotsk the series features the following coins: Slupsk, Nowogr6d Wielki, Rostock and Szczecin.
Polotsk is a city in Belarus located where the Po Iota joins the Dvina. The city's history spans a period of almost 1150 years. Polotsk was founded in the latter half of the 9th century as a small fortified settlement, and was one of the oldest towns in Rus. The area was then transformed into the Duchy of Polotsk, and under the Lithuanian rule the city was granted Magdeburg rights in 1498; later Polotsk became the capital of the Polotsk voivodeship of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Until1772 the city remained within the territory of the I Republic, since 1793 within the Russian Empire, and later within the USSR. Polotsk is home to numerous sites of interest, including the best known structure of the city, the Cathedral of Saint Sophia, dating back to the 11th century, as well as the Jesuit church (cathedral) of Saint Nicholas whose grounds feature a college founded by King Stephen Batory. Today the city is the hub of the Polotsk raion and is an important cultural and industrial center.
Nice and perfect gift!
