The Moscow Kremlin Egg, also known as the Uspenski Cathedral Egg, was an Easter gift from the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, for his wife Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna.
Originally the presentation was planned for 1904, but eventually it took place two years later.
The design of this egg was inspired by the architecture of the Assumption Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin, the traditional place of tsars' coronation, including Nicholas II.
It is the largest of known Faberge Eggs, manufactured to commemorate the return of the imperial couple to the capital in 1903.
The egg rests on an octagonal base which contains a gold music box.
When a clockwork mechanism is wounded up by a gold key, two traditional Easter hymns are played, including the "Izhe Khveruviny", a favourite hymn of Nicholas II.
The Moscow Kremlin Egg has never left Russia and nowadays is held in the Kremlin Armoury, one of the oldest museums in Moscow.
