SILVER AND NIOBIUM

Through the combination of silver and niobium, the Austrian Mint has achieved an internationally recognised innovation whose quality no other mint has so far managed to equal. The fascinating colours arise without the application of colour, purely through light refraction on an extremely thin, transparent oxide layer. Cosmology fittingly illuminates 2015 with two colours – midnight blue and the colour of the stars. In combination with the silver outer ring, the coin’s niobium ‘pill’ forms a wonderful entity and creates a unique colour experience.

COSMOLOGY

Featuring an illustration of the galaxy on the obverse and the European Extremely Large Telescope on the reverse, Cosmology brilliantly deploys its contrasting blue and yellow niobium hues to bring the sky at night to life. Due for completion in 2022, the telescope will enable us to look deeper than ever into the galaxy and perhaps help us find out whether parallel universes and extraterrestrial life really exist. We already know a great deal about the origins of the cosmos, including the solar system, the planets and even life itself. We already know that we humans are also made of stardust, thus a journey into outer space can in some way be seen to be a trip back to home.

The Austrian Mint’s Silver Niobium coins are not only of interest to coin experts but have also reached a far wider audience. Most of the coins in the series were sold out long ago and are now only available on the secondary market, where they command prices well over their original value and have achieved cult status.

This new two-tone coin is minted to a maximum of 65,000 pieces in Special Uncirculated quality only and coin contains 9 grammes of 900 Fine Silver in its outer ring and 6.5 grammes of 998 pure niobium. Each piece is encapsulated, boxed and comes complete with a numbered certificate guaranteeing its authenticity.
