The Mint of Poland is delighted to introduce the phenomenal series Missing Works of Art which resents several mysteriously lost artifacts that were never found after their disappearance during the Second World War.
The first coin is dedicated to one of the most renowned works of the Italian Renaissance – ‘Raphael’s Portrait of a Young Man’.
This exceptional coin combines art and the highest craftsmanship. The reverse of the coin presents a precisely mapped ‘Portrait of a Young Man’ and the Czartoryski Museum where the painting was housed till it was lost.
The empty frame on its obverse refers to the theme of the series. The ‘Portrait of a Young Man’ was painted probably in the first two decadesof the 16th century by the Italian artist Raphael Santi. The painting was purchasedin the early years of the 19th century by the Czartoryski family and became a part of their collections in the Czartoryski Museum in Cracow. It was the most valuable piece of art in Poland that was lost during the Second World War.
