What is the most common "pet"? You can find it everywhere in house and garden, it tries to eat your food and is more often faster than you ... yes, it is the HOUSEFLY!

To be honest, no one likes to have flies in the rooms, but nevertheless they are fascinating insects.
About 90 percent of all flies occurring in human habitations are houseflies. Houseflies are important in breaking down and recycling nutrients and organic material. Because their larvae grow best in human garbage and feces, they are more common in urban areas. Their favorite environments are dung heaps, garbage cans, and roadkill. They also reproduce on rotted fruit and vegetables.
Houseflies have dark grey or green grey bodies with dark lines. The main part of their body has 8 segments in males and 9 segments in females. Females have 5 segments of their abdomen visible all the time. She sticks out the other 4 when she lays her eggs. This way, she can lay eggs under the surface. Females are a little bit bigger than males. Like all flies, they only have one pair of translucent wings for flying and the second pair are only used for balance. Houseflies are 4 to 8 mm long, and are 6.35 mm long on average. Like many flies, houseflies have mouthparts like sponges. They mouths are made up of two fleshy parts attached to their lower lip. The lips have grooves that are like channels for the liquid food they eat.

Houseflies eyes are compound organs that are comprised of thousands of individual lenses. Compound eyes are capable of detecting both the polarization of light and color spectrums unseen by humans. Houseflies eyes can recognize even the slightest movements in a wide field. This allows the fly to see a far wider range, as well as detect and react to movement at a quicker pace than species with simple eyes. This is the reason that it is extremely difficult to swat a housefly. Houseflies are meticulous in their grooming, particularly around their eyes. These flies use their forelegs to remove any material that has come into contact with the eyes.
The housefly is an object of biological research, mainly because of one remarkable quality: the sex determination mechanism. The housefly exhibits many different mechanisms for sex determination, such as male heterogamy (like most insects and mammals), female heterogamy (like birds) and maternal control over offspring sex. This makes the housefly one of the most suitable species to study the evolution of sex determination.
