Despite being a small island of only about 700km2 orchids given her favorable geographical conditions. About 226 species of native orchids have been recorded in Singapore, since the early days before its independence. Its natural occurrence in Singapore is valued and significant to us, as Singapore has always been known as a “little red dot” with an absence of natural resources. Robust and graceful, these well-loved flowers are considered one of Singapore’s natural wonders.

To protect these valued flowers from the effects of urbanisation, the Singapore Botanic Gardens practices
diligent conservation efforts, cultivating them and introducing them to public spaces. This augurs well
with government’s vision to develop Singapore as a Garden City, of which Singapore Botanic Gardens
played an important role by lending expertise and resources towards the greening of the nation.

Following the success of the inaugural issue in 2011, and the second and third issues in 2012 and 2013
respectively, the Monetary Authority of Singapore is proud to present the fourth issue that celebrates the
beauty of over 200 species of orchids that once thrived in Singapore. The 2014 Native Orchids of

Singapore Coins feature two unique blooms namely, Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi and Coelogyne
rochussenii. Both orchids have been re-introduced successfully to parks and other nature areas. Similar
to the design concept of the earlier issues, the 2014 Native Orchids of Singapore coins are partially
rimless at the coin edges. Colour is applied to the rimless area, which further accentuates the splendour
of the beautiful blooms.

, Singapore is home to many diverse species of native

PHALAENOPSIS CORNU-CERVI
The Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi is characterised by its star-shaped flowers, which are yellow with specks of deep maroon on them.
The flowers measure about 3cm to 4cm in diameter and usually last for a long period of time. The Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi usually grows on trees in exposed lowland areas and can be found in many parts of South-East Asia.
