The coin series „Vetro di Murano“ is more than beautiful glass embedded in 2 oz silver. It tells the history of Murano by famous objects and traditional techniques.

Let's have a closer look at the first issue: The purple plate from 1470 is decorated in fusible enamels, the same technique which is used for our Murano coin. The 15th century Italy was strongly influenced by Gothic. An architectural masterpiece of Gothic can be seen in Venice, the famous Doge‘s Palace. The characteristic facade of the Palace was included in the design for the coin ring. With following issues we will travel through the art styles and techniques that built the worldwide fame of Murano Glass.

Murano Glass

Murano glass is glass made on the Venetian island of Murano, which has specialised in fancy glasswares since the 8th century. Murano’s glassmakers led Europe for centuries, developing or refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enamelled glass (smalto), glass with threads of gold (aventurine), multicoloured glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass. Today, the artisans of Murano are still employing these centuries-old techniques, crafting everything from contemporary art glass and glass figurines to Murano glass chandeliers and wine stoppers.
