The history of glassmaking can be traced back to 3500 BC in Mesopotamia. Archaeological evidence suggests that the first true glass was made in coastal north Syria, Mesopotamia or Ancient Egypt. The earliest known glass objects, of the mid second millennium BC, were beads, perhaps initially created as accidental by-products of metal-working or during the production of faience, a pre-glass vitreous material made by a process similar to glazing. Glass remained a luxury material, and the disasters that overtook Late Bronze Age civilizations seem to have brought glass-making to a halt.In the early medieval times glassmakers all over the world started to develop many different technologies to create beautiful artworks and make glass as prestigious as jewellery. Today we know many famous glass designs as Tiffany, Murano, Bohemian
glass and crystal or Baccarat. Our series leads you through all the different styles and typical designs of famous glass brands.
Bohemian glass and crystal have a centuries long history of being in-ternationally recognised for its high quality, craftsmanship, beauty and innovative designs. Hand-cut, engraved, blown and painted designs are
among the best known art of glass in the world. Over the centuries bohemian glassware became as prestigious as jewellery and was sought-after by the wealthy and the aristocracy of the time.Beautiful crystal chandeliers could be found in the palaces of the French king Louis XV, Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria, and Elizabeth of Russia. Within the 19th century Bohemian glass was exported all over the world and became a well-known trademark. Still today the trademark “Bohemian Glass and Crystal” remain valued all over the world.
