On 15th February 1945 at 10 a.m. a muffled thud shook the OldTown of Dresden, whereupon, shortly after, a massive cloud of smoke rose into the air. The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), proud landmark of the Baroque metropolis known as the “Florence of the North”, had collapsed. The Dresden firestorm, triggered by the allied bombing in the closing stages of the Second World War, had earlier set fire to the church during the night of the 13th to 14th February. The stonework was ultimately so badly weakened by the heat, that it could no longer withstand the massive weight of the stone dome.
The Baroque masterpiece, built after a design by the architect George Bähr from 1726-1743, was no more than a ruin. In the GDR the ruins of the Frauenkirche were declared a memorial against war and destruction. Not until the reunification of Germany in 1990 did the plans for a reconstruction of the building begin to take shape. The final cost of the project that began in 1994 amounted 2005 a reconsecration ceremony took place in the Frauenkirche. During the reconstruction as many original stones as possible were reused from the ruins, and can be recognized by their darker colouration. Today the “stone bell“, as the Frauenkirche was traditionally called owing to its striking dome, once again towers over Dresden, the capital city of Saxony, as one of Germany’s most important Baroque edifices.
