Interesting facts about this unique coin

• How long did it take to turn the idea of a DNA coin into reality?

The very first idea rose up in July 2013 and the first samples were minted by mid of

December 2013. Although a half year might sound long at first, a look at the numbers show what really went into this project:

- more than 600 man-hours

- more than 50 sketches prepared by designers

- more than 130 pictures taken in the zoo

- the work of six companies from different branches combined

• What were the biggest challenges?

Product manager had to face several challenges. The first step was to research if it would be even possible to extract animal DNA yet make it visible and conserve it.

Then a laboratory needed to be found, capable of the extraction and conserving. It

needed to be 100% trustworthy and willing to certify the final product. Next we had to find a zoo that shelters endangered animals and would allow us to collect DNA material (for example saliva). Also mint wanted the zoo to certify the final product.

After all these steps were ready, we were still far away from the finished coin!

Finding a glaziery for the extremely filigrane ampulla, a mint who could combine the

ampulla into the silver and many more questions came up during the process.

• Will it be just this coin or is a series planned?

Two coins will be issued per year, featuring endangered animals. So far the planning includes tigers, apes and even whales. The only limit is of course set by the access to the tissue of these animals.

The Concept

DNA is the vital base of all creatures on Earth. What can be a better symbol for the protection of endangered species than conserving their unique DNA?

Extracting real DNA and conserve it in a coin - without harming the animal at all!

The Partners

Mint cooperates with one of the leading European laboratories. It executes bio-medical researches and conducts standard-

setting molecular DNA diagnostic. For „Elements of Life“ certified DNA sections was prepared.

Mint also cooperated with the zoo Arche Noah Brunswick. It is specialised on endangered animals and their breeding, working

together with known organisations like Stiftung Artenschutz (Wildlife Conservation Foundation) and the BNA (German Association of Professional Wildlife Conservation). Each sold coin helps the zoo as a donation 2Euro is made for every coin.

The Coin

The 2oz silver coin in dazzling proof will show the actual Cheetah, that the DNA was extracted from. The stunning portrait features the typical strong and pride look of big cats. The well-known DNA double helix is of course also depicted on the coin. Numbering certificate for each coin.
