Singapore has a rich marine biodiversity which is achieved through a delicate balance of the development and biodiversity conservation efforts. From the mangrove forests and mudflats to  the beautiful reefs and open seas, Singapore is home to many interesting marine animals that will seek to amaze you. 
To celebrate the beauty of the marine life in Singapore, The Singapore Mint is proud to present the inaugural 2014 Marine Life Commemorative Coin Set, issued by the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC). NBC recognises the importance of the biodiversity conservation efforts of Singapore and we are honoured to have their support in the issuance of the coins. Presented in a unique coin shape that showcases the rich marine biodiversity of Singapore, this 4-coin set is the first issue of the „Discovery of Nature‟ coin series.
Each of the coins is shaped in a unique “wave-like” effect, emulating the habitats where the animals live. To create a more vivid and realistic depiction of the animals, tasteful coloured 
elements have been carefully infused onto the coins. The 4 coins packed in a wave-shaped capsule form a seamless scenery of the seashores to the deep waters, with each coin featuring
a rimless effect. This creates a remarkable illusion in which the marine animals are seen coming alive and emerging from the coins. This is a further testament to our coin minting technology 
which requires exceptional precision in minting. Enjoy a captivating story of the seas as told by putting all four coins together, which form a structure symbolising “giant sea waves” that carry 
you from the muddy sea shores, all the way to the deep sea waters.

1. Rosy fiddler crab (Uca rosea)
A locally endangered species found only in back mangroves, where the mud is firmer. This crab is small with a squarish body, and has a short and stout enlarged pincer. The palm is red, pink or purplish and the fingers are white. The male fiddler crab is characterised by its large pincer. It is highly endangered in Singapore with most of the back mangroves lost at a rapid rate.
2. Knobbly sea star (Protoreaster nodosus),It is found in coral rubble or among sea grasses and may grow to a diameter of 35 cm. It varies,in colour and shade and may be red, orange or brown, with a single row of knobs along the upper side of the arms. While its appearance may seem frightening, the Knobbly sea star is not 
venomous. It is endangered as it is often harvested for live aquarium trade.
3. Estuarine seahorse (Hippocampus kuda)
This seahorse hardly looks like a fish, but is actually a relative of the Pipefish. Unlike most fish that lay eggs, the seahorse is special, as the male gets „pregnant‟. After mating, the female lays 
her eggs in a special pouch on the male‟s belly for safekeeping. When the eggs are ready to hatch, the male seahorse „gives birth‟ by pushing the young out of his pouch. The seahorse is 
extremely vulnerable and endangered, due to destruction of its habitats and increase in its usage for traditional Chinese medicine.
4. Blue ring angelfish (Pomacanthus annularis)
A recent new discovery in Singapore, the blue ring angelfish is commonly found in coral reefs.
Adults have a distinctly white tail and blue diagonal stripes; juveniles have alternating iridescent light blue and dark stripes. The fish undergoes many changes in colour, from dark blue in its 
youth to orange with a tinge of violet in its adulthood.
