Throughout history sailing has been instrumental in the development of civilization, affording humanity greater mobility than travel over land, whether for trade, transport or warfare, and the
capacity for fishing. Advances in sailing technology from the Middle Ages onward enabled explorers to make longer voyages into regions with extreme weather and climatic conditions.
Sailing has contributed to many great explorations in the world.
HMS Bounty was a small merchant vessel purchased by the Royal Navy for a botanical mission. That mission was never completed, due to a mutiny led by the acting Master. This was the famous Mutiny on the Bounty. To prevent the ship‘s detection during this mutiny, and
anyone‘s possible escape, the ship was burned on 23 January 1790 in what is now called Bounty Bay. In January 1957 the remains of Bounty where discovered.
Some of Bounty‘s remains are still partially visible in the waters of Bounty Bay.
The last of the Bounty‘s 4-pounders was recovered in 1998 by an archaeological team from James Cook University.
