Celebrating one of the Seven Wonders of the World is the latest commemorative coin from the Pobjoy Mint and it is a marvel in its own right.

This technically unique proof fine silver coin issue, on behalf of the British Virgin Islands (BVI), features Egypt’s Great Pyramids and has been issued in ultra high relief with the highest point standing approximately 4.5mm to 5mm above the main face of the coin. When viewed from the side, the true genius of this collector’s coin comes to life, featuring not just the three-dimensional pyramids, but also the flowing sand dunes at Giza that create the irregular desert landscape.

In addition, sand brought from the site of the Great Pyramids has been encapsulated into the coin making this one of the most unique coins in the world.

The uniqueness of this coin reflects the unique quality of the Great Pyramids

The Great Pyramid at Giza has stood at the end of the desert, to the west of the River Nile, since the 26th Century BC, when it was built for Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops). Two later kings of the 4th Dynasty – Khafre (Chefron) and Menkaure (Mycerinus) – built pyramids of their own close by and together these three monuments form one of the world’s most familiar group of structures. The Great Pyramid stands 137m/450ft high and is constructed of more than 2.25 million blocks of limestone which weigh more than 2.5 tonnes each.

Many contradictory theories have been suggested regarding the pyramid's construction techniques with estimates of its workforce ranging from 15,000 to a peak workforce of 40,000. It has been proposed that the Great Pyramid took approximately 10 years to complete. Still, a large number of mysteries associated with the Pyramids remain – from their planning to the many chambers which have still yet to be explored and it is this sense of mystery that attracts over 3.5m visitors every year.

Available in 1oz Fine Silver, the obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today.
